Geopolitical Consequences of the Escalation of the Political Struggle in Germany

The Ghost of Angela Merkel

Parliamentary elections in Germany, which will be held in late September this year, have been already recognized as historical. After all, it’s not just about changing political elites and moving away from Angela Merkel’s policy. The main geopolitical entity in the European Union, Germany, is facing many pressing challenges of our time, which it inherits from the era of Merkel’s rule and due to the incapacity and Europe’s decidophobia. Whether the current ruling coalition will remain in Germany, or a new political ruling force will be formed and take responsibility for all EU policies, will be revealed in the upcoming elections. There is now evidence that new political players have matured in the country who will be able to shake the current foundations of Germany’s domestic and foreign policy.

At the same time, given the pro-Russian nature of the coalition candidate Armin Laschet and his traditional subordination to the equally oriented Angela Merkel, coming to power in Germany of new, more creative politicians may be even more useful. Both for Germany itself and for Ukraine.

The election campaign is gaining momentum. One of the defining trends of the new political forces and their nominees for Chancellor will be their attitude to the escalation of the conflict over the deployment of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine and continuation or termination of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. Assessing one’s own well-being, peace and prospects for economic development exclusively from the standpoint of peaceful coexistence and trade with Russia is a thing of the past. It is time for the formation of new effective political forces in Germany, which adequately assess current events and threats of cooperation with such a clear aggressor as Russia, and will be able to become the leaders of the new generation of Germany. At the same time, the pro-Russian “ghost of Angela” will continue to influence political landscape, alliances and development priorities for both Germany and Europe as a whole.
